Humalog (insulin lispro) is a rapid-acting mealtime analogue with an onset of ~15 minutes, peak at ~1 hour, and duration of ~4 hours; it is dosed at meals to cover the postprandial glucose rise. In a basal-bolus regimen the two are used together, not interchangeably.

Lantus vs Novolog — how do they differ?+

Lantus (insulin glargine) is a long-acting basal insulin; Novolog (insulin aspart) is a rapid-acting mealtime insulin. They serve different roles in a basal-bolus regimen — Lantus provides 24-hour background coverage, Novolog covers meals. Novolog is pharmacokinetically similar to Humalog (lispro).
